I am a 17-year-old activist/arts advocate and have been participating in marches, protests and petitions since I was 5 years old. I serve on Mayor Garcetti's Youth Council for South LA. And have generated a petition to ban factory farming in California with over 55,000 signatures. I organize community events and get teens like me connected with social justice issues and activism all over LA.

Manage stress as a teen

How to manage stress and anxiety (as a teen)

Hey teens!! we’re being tossed a lot of information that we cant handle! Or can we?

We’re constantly overwhelmed with grades,  Confusing homework and figuring out our future. Plus all the million other things we have to deal with OUTSIDE of school!   School is the #1 Culprit for Teen Stress- which makes a TON of sense! We’re judged so harshly for our work even if try our best and in the end our knowledge is determined on a piece of paper.

U.S teens are more stressed than adults

It’s important as a youth today that we know how to balance everything in life and not let one thing take over the other, especially the questionable people in power with P’s controlling our country, killing the environment, deporting people who know America as their home- I can go on and on. And in the end, what they do is going to be in our hands. It is not fair that these billionaires get to pollute this earth and destroy it because of greed and its up to us to fix it.

Here are some things we can do to take a breath and relax- We deserve it!

MOVE YOUR BODY!!

Whether its yoga, skating with your buddies or even walking your dog around the block. Engaging in physical activity is proven to reduce stress by an immense amount. Exercising not only relaxes you it boosts confidence, improves complexion and mood, it will help  you get a great nights rest! So when you’re feeling upset and angry like you want to scream, go for a nice walk outside and you will feel better.

REACH OUT!!

Even if you don’t think so. There will always be people who want to listen and help no matter what. It’s not the end of the world and things always get better. When you feel like no one cares or wants to listen to you your wrong. Think of a friend, family member or someone you really trust, give them a call and tell them whats up, you will feel much better after getting it off your chest. Getting social support from people you care about is vital and a great stress reliever.

TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF AND REMEMBER YOUR STRENGTHS

We must always remember that in order to really do our best, we must first take care of ourselves. An example of this would be

1.)Hygiene: When you’re bombarded with work it’s often easy to forget to take a shower or brush your teeth you might be going everywhere in your PJ’s too. That will just stress ya out even more! Taking care of yourself and looking “presentable” (i.e: NOT smelling like a garbage can in your PJ’s) will make you feel better and determined to get the work done!

2.) Mindfulness: Too many thoughts running through your head at once? Writing down your thoughts will help clear your mind so you focus on the task at hand. It’s also a form of meditation which also helps too, taking 5 minutes to sit, close your eyes and forget about school, work and everything that is stressing you out will help you regroup and feel better.

Always remember everything you do and love doing, find out a way to help others with this and do it even more, if you love animals, volunteer at an animal shelter or if you admire painting go to an art class, Put  what you love to do before what you have to do and those stresses will seem like nothing. Because in the end its what you love that matters no matter what.

Here are some great sources that all teens should know about!

1.) TEEN LINE. Do you need help working something out? Do you want to talk to someone who understands, like another teen? https://teenlineonline.org is the place to go!

2.)BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB. A great place and a safe space to make friends and have fun! Click here!

3.) VOLUNTEER:  Volunteering at a local senior center or youth group is great! Not only will you meet new people, get volunteer hours and have fun. Volunteering  is a great learning experience all around!

Why is school stressing me out?  – what is it about school that is causing this stress?  Is it necessary? What is the end result of stress? your health. Is it worth it? Comment below or write me about what you feel!

The xmas tree is up! The bed is being made for the boarding dogs

I am extremely grateful to say that my first official job is with the ECO DOG WASH AND CARE LA.  Eco dog is green certified business and uses only natural, Vegan, eco friendly, biodegradable and cruelty free products with a range  from aloe vera and avocado infused simply bath spray  to  peppermint, cedar, geranium & lemongrass to argan oil, coconut-derived cleanser, jojoba, lavender and myrrh in their Simply Clean Shampoo. All of eco dogs products not only make your dog smell good using only natural ingredients but the formulas made also to naturally repel fleas & ticks.

IMG_1154Before i started working at eco dog i had been taking both my dogs (medium sized yellow lab and small tibetan terrier) for either a self wash or groom for years! Their prices are wonderful! Did i mention that its only $32 for a full day of cage free care! where the dogs play all day with each other and staff. When the dogs are boarding (staying over night) they are with a staff member at all times, get fed a natural healthy vegan dinner with no artificial flavor or colors (Im telling ya! the pups at eco dog eat healthier than me! ) and sleep in huge human beds with conforters and pillows.

The tree!

I absolutley reccomend eco dog to anyone with a doggy! Whether it be big or small they are all accepted and treated with immense care and respect. Eco dog takes in dogs that were found on the street too with no home, abused and broken yet whenever i come in for work those dogs are filled with joy and love for the care that the dogs revieve is outstanding, i had never even heard of a dog care or wash that takes care of them as much as eco dog does.IMG_1153

Eco Dog Wash started in 2010 by Owner Karen

“I started this business because I love dogs and know that other dog lovers want eco-smart, eco-friendly options for self-wash, grooming, daycare & boarding services right here in our neighborhood.

I’ve lived here for over 20 years and am deeply committed to this community and doing what I can to support ecologically sound practices. In every aspect of the store operations we strive to be as clean and green as possible.”

My favorite course was Community Organizing 101 Service Project because it really made me realize that not only Can youth really can make a difference in different  communities, but we already have! There is no time to delay. There is no reason to wait until after college. The city and it’s people need our help and ideas now!

Civic Youth has taught me to be very proactive in my community and take initiative when there is none being taken. It has taught me to be more responsible and be a strong leader. When we were organizing our community projects I realized that I had strength as a group organizer and leadership skills. IMG_3054

Civic Youth helped me find my passion and what i want to do in life which is help people through Arts Activism and and be of service to The City.

Thank you Civic Youth LA, Empower LA and all the amazing mentors i had the opportunity to meet and work with:   Kimberly Rodriguez, Julienne Chen, Jasmine Elbarbary, Paola Fernadez, Tanya Pineda, Michael Long and Kevin Taylor and more!

DITCH the plastic bottle! Here is why

Did you know that about 60 billion plastic water bottles are tossed in landfills each year? Plastic water bottles are a huge hazard to the environment and only have negative effects on the earth.  plastic-ocean

Here are only SOME of the problems plastic water bottles have on the earth all of these facts are from ban the bottle  and these all have to do with the U.S

1.)  Americas usage of plastic bottles is at high demand, thus using  over 17 billion barrels of oil yearly, that is enough oil to supply about 1.4 million cars a year.

2.) With all the energy plastic water bottles cause the energy could be used instead to power 190,000 homes

3.) Antimony, which is found in PET plastic bottles, in small doses can cause dizziness and depression; in larger doses it can cause nausea, vomiting and deathIsland-2

Plastic  Bottled water is not good for you either, yes it is water and water is natural. But plastic isn’t and when plastic gets hot it releases chemicals making the water no longer good to drink which is a huge waste.

Plastic water bottles also take over 1,000 years to biodegrade and if they are set on fire or burnt they release even more toxins.

Ways to ditch the plastic bottle

Getting a reusable NON-plastic water bottle without any BPA is actually hard to find yet once i find and try out one that will be the best choice for you and the environment.  BPA free reusable plastic water bottle or stainless steel bottles, yet aluminum reusable bottles do have a possible BPA liner which is not good.
